Capital punishment awaits six individuals convicted of the murder of former MP George Thuo.

Milimani High Court has been urged to impose the most severe sentence possible on six individuals found guilty of the murder of former Juja Member of Parliament, George Thuo.

In a session held on Tuesday, May 28, the six defendants were convicted of the murder.

George Thuo passed away in 2013 shortly after dining at a prominent restaurant in Thika Town, Kiambu County.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) successfully demonstrated to the High Court that the MP’s demise resulted from poisoning with Cyhalothrine Pesticide.

Cyhalothrine is a widely used pesticide in Kiambu, employed to combat pests that threaten crops and vegetables on local farms. It is readily available and plays a crucial role in safeguarding agricultural produce from harm.

The prosecution notified the court that the convicted individuals displayed no remorse, therefore, leniency should not be considered. Additionally, it urged the court to consider the family’s statement and their suffering.

Thuo’s wife testified in court, stating that her husband was in good health before his unexpected death. She also affirmed that her husband passed away while in the presence of the six convicted individuals.

The court will review the prosecution’s arguments and deliver a verdict for the six individuals on June 21, 2024. According to the Penal Code, individuals convicted of murder may face the death penalty.

Kenya has been shifting from a system of retributive justice to restorative justice, resulting in many death sentences being commuted to life imprisonment.
